Sonnetend Field Spaniels

Field Spaniels we have lost

This page is dedicated to those dogs who have left us.

Some have been very important in the foundations of our Sonnetend line.

All have been much loved members of our family.

Nancy

(Tayowen Touch of Dignity x Sh Ch Elgert Cadenza for Sonnetend)

10/01/2012 - 15/01/2025

From Maisie’s second litter (the renowned "Touch" litter), Nancy is the one that stayed from the litter of ten! A most delightful young lady with the gentlest nature and a fun attitude to life! She was always "my girl"!

Nancy had a flying start to her show career with many 1st places at both Championship and Open Shows. She gained her final points for her Junior Warrant and won her 1st CC at The National 2013 under judge Jeff Horswell, aged 16 months!

In June 16 Nancy won her 2nd CC with BOB under judge Mick Howes. Back in the show ring following maternal duties, Nancy delighted us winning the RCC at Bath (judge Ben Bennett) and her 3rd CC and title at the Field Spaniel Society Championship Show 2017 and Reserve Best in Show under judge Sheila Taylor. Her 4th CC with BOB was won under breed specialist Jayne Bennett at Darlington 2018.

Nancy had a fabulous day winning Best in Show at the Field Spaniel Society Open Show 2018, with her litter brother Shane (Sh Ch Sonnetend Finishing Touch at Shirmal) winning Best Dog and Reserve Best in Show!

Nancy was an excellent mum and produced two wonderful litters - our Heroes and Heroines litter and our George litter! Her offspring includes Multi Champion Sonnetend Indiana Jones and Sh Ch Sonnetend Faith and you can find her name in many pedigrees.

It was a proud day when Nancy won Best Progeny at the FSS Championship Show 2019 and on the same day her daughter Tweed, Sh Ch Sonnetend Faith won the Bitch CC and Best in Show!

Her final show was Crufts 2020 where, to our delight, she won the Reserve Bitch CC at the age of 8!

She will forever be missed.

Bred by Ms G Osborn

27/05/2009 - 19/01/2022

A very special boy, Spencer's sire was the top winning Field Spaniel, Alfie, and his dam the incredible Grace. Spencer was Best Field Spaniel Puppy Dog at Crufts 2010 and he won his Junior Warrant at 15 months old and in the same week won his 1st CC under Glynn Morgan at WKC 2010. His 2nd CC was won at National Gundog 2011 under Ben Bennett, his 3rd at LKA 2011 under Di Hammond, his 4th at The National in 2013 under Jeff Horswell and his 5th at Three Counties under judge Kit Nicholson. He then won his 6th CC with Best in Show at the Field Spaniel Society Championship Show 2013 under judge Ann Harding. His 7th was won at Blackpool under judge Fiona Coward-Scholes and his 8th at Midland Counties under Rob Butler. He also has 6 RCCs.

Spencer was Top Field Spaniel in 2013.

Spencer has sired several litters in the UK and 1 in Holland. He has left a legacy behind and his progeny continue to do well in the show ring and the field at home and abroad!
We are delighted that Spencer has 3 Show Champion daughters, Sh Ch Cochen Calypso, and the sisters, Sh Ch Elgert R'anna and Sh Ch Elgert T'lissa, and 2 Show Champion sons in the UK, Sh Ch Sonnetend Tic Tac Toe and Sh Ch Jesham Baronet, and other CC and RCC winning offspring, as well as an International Champion son, Sonnetend Indiana Jones aka Plume.

Our beautiful boy is so greatly missed.

Max

(Sh Ch Nadavin Inheritance x Coverwell Black Wool)

Bred by Mrs J Ford
14/7/01 - 29/5/15

Max came to us in August 2008 at just over 7 years old. He soon formed a strong bond with Martin both in the show ring and the shooting field (and on the sofa!!) His achievements have astounded us. He won his first CC just before his 8th birthday, and his title less than 3 months later. He won 9 CCs, winning 3 in 2011 at the age of 10. He is pictured left at Richmond Championship Show 2011, winning his 8th CC together with BOB under judge Chris Bexon

Max died peacefully in his sleep just short of his 14th birthday. We miss him dreadfully but he lives on in his progeny.

Max’s achievements:

CC and BOB Blackpool Champ Show 2009 - Charles Holgate

CC and BOB SKC 2009 - Frank Kane

CC and BOS Richmond 2009 - Mrs Ann Moss

CC and BOS Darlington 2009 - Jeff Horswell

CC and BOB Manchester 2010 - Mrs Ferelith Somerfield

CC and BOB Bath 2010 - Mrs Jennifer Lloyd-Carey

CC and BOS SKC 2011 - Mrs Shula Shipton

CC and BOB Richmond 2011 - Chris Bexon

CC and BOB Midland Counties 2011 - Mrs Margaret Robson

Following Max’s win at SKC  in 2009  Max was asked to pose for photos for Frank Kane’s book  Judging the Gundog Breeds!

Maisie

(Can Ch Winfarthings Jonathan Archer for Mishules x

Sh Ch Nadavin Lilianna for Elgert JW)

Bred by Ms G Osborn

26/03/08 - 06/04/2016

Our gorgeous girl Maisie - such a delight to live with and with the gentlest of natures. Maisie was our foundation bitch and to Gretel Osborn (Elgert Field Spaniels) we are eternally grateful for entrusting this special girl to us.

She was just 7 weeks old when Peggy Grayson assessed her: “She’ll make a fine brood bitch this one” she said and two litters and 17 puppies later, I rather think she was right!

But not just a fine brood bitch, Maisie was a wonderful show girl winning her first CC at Richmond Championship Show 2010 under breed specialist Mrs Jill Holgate. Her second CC was won under breed specialist Roger Hall-Jones at the Field Spaniel Society Championship Show 2011 where she then went Best in Show - a wonderful day, never to be forgotten. Her third and crowning CC was again won under a breed specialist Mrs Shula Shipton at SKC 2011 - another memorable day!

She went on to win a fourth CC under breed specialist Mrs Margaret Robson at Midland Counties 2011, and her fifth CC was won at National Gundog 2012 under breed specialist Keith Smith. She has 3 RCCs.

Maisie had 2 litters - mated to our Sh Ch Coverwell Davy's Double to Sonnetend she produced our Double litter from which we kept Cassie - Sonnetend Double Duchess. Her 2nd litter she was mated to Harley - Tayowen Touch of Dignity - and this mating produced our stunning Touch litter from which we kept Nancy - Sh Ch Sonnetend Soft Touch JW.

From this amazing litter of 10, 4 bitches have gone on to have litters of their own, and 4 dogs have gone on to sire litters, and hence Maisie can be found in many of today's dogs' pedigrees.

Maisie’s offspring continue to delight us with 4 UK Show Champions, 1 International Champion, 1 Swedish Champion, as well as CC winning sons and daughters!!!

She was truly a one in a million dog and was adored by the whole family.

Sonnetend Double Duchess

Cassie

(Sh Ch Coverwell Davy's Double to Sonnetend x Sh Ch Elgert Cadenza for Sonnetend)

31/12/09 - 14/11/2018

Cassie, from our first Field litter here at Sonnetend, achieved well in the show ring winning Best Puppy in Show at the Field Spaniel Society Open Show in 2010 and gaining her stud book number with the RCC at WELKS Championship Show 2012. She enjoyed working in the shooting field. She was handled in the ring and field by our daughter Abigail, and after her litter she won a first CC at Windsor under judge Hilary Tye.

Cassie had 1 litter - our Games litter - 10 beautiful puppies and this produced our gourgeous Rose - Sonnetend Ringa Ringa Roses, her sister Dottie - Sonnetend Dot to Dot to Cabharan, another sister Lullah - Sonnetend Kiss Chase at Thandiwe, and the stunning Ianto - Sh Ch Sonnetend Tic Tac Toe.

Ceri

(Kingsmist Baron x Wealdthorn Twickers)

31/8/2006 - 4/7/18

Ceri, our first Field, often mistaken for an English Springer Spaniel due to her liver roan colour, enjoyed nothing more than a day out hunting, refusing to pick up game as she didn’t think it her job!

Ceri was our introduction to this amazing breed.
